Squirrel Away

The Challenge
We have nothing against squirrels!  But, squirrels frighten away wild birds, eat large quantities of expensive bird seed, and destroy bird feeders in their endless search for food.  “Squirrel Away™” is a natural, safe, non-violent and humane way of discouraging squirrels.  It is inexpensive and effective when used on all types of bird seed.

What is it?
Squirrel Away™” is made from Capsicum peppers, known colloquially where they are grown as “bird peppers”.  Capsaicin, the naturally occurring substance in capsicum peppers that makes the hot pepper so spicy, is distasteful to mammals.  Squirrels will not eat the seed, but it does not repel wild birds.  With “Squirrel Away™” treated bird seed in your bird feeders, a squirrel quickly learns not to visit and continues to find a new source of food.

Important Instructions
Do not forget that you are a mammal too!  “
Squirrel Away™” is not poisonous and will not harm humans, birds, mammals, or our environment in any way.  But, it can temporarily irritate your nose, eyes, and skin.  Individuals with allergies or respiratory problems should not use this product.  DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO USE “Squirrel Away™.  Mix the powder in a protected area out of the wind.  Do not touch the powder when mixing.  Flush with water in case of eye contact and wash your hands after use.

Helpful Hints for Complete Success Using “Squirrel Away.”

Squirrels are creatures of habit and our task is to break their habit of raiding the bird feeder.  The key to breaking the cycle is to make sure the concentration of “Squirrel Away™” is high and uniform throughout the feed.  The squirrel must be able to taste and smell the powder.

Flat or mesh bottom feeders allow the powder to sift off the seed, and can be a problem when birds or squirrels agitate the area.  This results in a low concentration of powder on the seed. The squirrels will seize the opportunity to eat as much seed as possible in a short period of time.  Our best results have been obtained with the use of a tube-type feeder.

Using ALL sunflower seed, or seed that has lower oil content on the surface of the hull, can be a problem.  The powder may not adhere as well on a dry seed, resulting in a lower concentration of “Squirrel Away™”.

Helpful Mixing Suggestions:

Mix only five pounds of seed at a time!  Mix the seed well with several sprays of a non-stick vegetable spray, or two teaspoons of cooking oil before applying the “Squirrel Away TM”.  The birds do not taste the oil or the powder. Therefore, they do not know it is there.  Mix the powder one teaspoon full at a time, taking care to mix thoroughly.  ALLOW TREATED SEED TO SIT 20 MINUTES BEFORE FILLING THE FEEDER!

If you have a persistent squirrel that eats the treated seed anyway, your entire feeder may be dusted with a bit of “
Squirrel Away™” before filling it with the treated bird seed.  It is very important the squirrels SMELL and TASTE the “Squirrel Away™”.  In a situation where there is a very high population of freeloaders, nothing will keep a starving squirrel from visiting your bird feeder.  The key here is to provide him with an inexpensive alternative source of untreated feed such as a “C&S Squirrel Log” or cracked corn and to continue treating your feeders with “Squirrel Away™”.
